I used to hate running. In secondary school, I found it really tiring to run and I was always one of the1 students to cross the finish line. Then, in 2023, my friend asked me 2 I would like to run a 10K event with him. I answered without thinking, "No way! I hate running."
Over the weekend, I3 his question. "Why do I hate running when I haven't tried it since Year 7 in secondary school?" In the end, I decided I should give running another4 before I said I hated it. I told my friend I would like to go to the 10K event with him. He was happy to hear that I would5 him. He advised me to look on the Internet for a running program to help me learn 6 to run.
There were lots of running programs on the Internet. I7 a 14-week running program that would teach me how to run for 30 minutes non-stop. I enjoyed following the program as I could see8 in my running each week. I went from hating running to loving running!
On the day of the 10K running event, my friends and father came to 9 for me. With their support(支持) and my training, I finished the 10K in 72 minutes. It was difficult, but I felt very proud for having tried it. From this 10 , I learned that it is a good idea to try something before saying you hate it!

"Life is short, but there is always time enough for courtesy (礼貌);
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
People love being polite. You might have noticed we are always saying"please", "thank you","excuse me", and"sorry".
When making a request, you ask someone to do something for you. ▲, it may not help them in any way.
Sometimes, you might make a request, and that request can be difficult for the other person to do. So it is necessary to make sure that you are being polite when making a request.
To do this, you might include some words such as"can", "could", or"please" to soften(使温和) your approach. They may make it look like you are asking a question instead of making a request. However, don't worry — the listener will understand you.
For example, if you are in a restaurant and say"I want the bill(账单)" to the waiter, your request will be considered very direct. You might use this kind of language if you are angry or have had very bad service. However, if you wish to sound polite, you might consider speaking like this:
"Can I have the bill, please?"
"Could I possibly have the bill, please?"
We can also use polite language to ask for permission(准许). For example, just sitting down next to someone without asking might be considered a bit forward (鲁莽的). If that person is waiting for a friend, you may create an uncomfortable situation. You can ask for permission first. For example:
"Would it be OK if I sat here?"
"Do you mind if I sit here?"

I'm Mary. I've decided to improve my German in the new term. Perhaps some of my advice can help you with your own language learning.
Speak more
On my way to work or in the supermarket,I try to describe my surroundings(环境) in my head or out loud to remind myself of vocabulary and useful phrases.
Join social groups
Last term I joined a rock band and learned lots of new vocabulary about music. This term I will join a badminton club and a German conversation group to give myself more chances to practice speaking with people who have common interests.
Change the language settings(设置) on my mobile phone
To encourage myself to think in German, I changed my mobile phone into German. Every time I send an e-mail, I discover new words.
Watch more films
It's a good idea to watch familiar (熟悉的) films dubbed (配音) into German. All the voices are strange, but as I already know the story, I can follow what the characters are saying. I don't have to worry about missing anything.
Laugh at myself
I've learned from my first term that I'm very good at making mistakes. There was a time when I went shopping for a scarf and kept using the German word for"sheep". This term, instead of feeling stupid, I will laugh at my silly mistakes and try again.
