A Non-Credit Courses The Pre-College Program offers non-credit courses. Students will experience college-level courses even by some of our college's leading experts and will receive written feedback(反馈) on their work at the end of the course. Pre-College students will also receive a grade of satisfactory/ unsatisfactory and a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the program.
All non-credit courses start from 9:00 a. m.—11:30 a. m. daily and may-have additional requirements in the afternoons or evenings.
Course 1: Case Studies in Neuroscience

Using student-centered, active-learning methods and real-world examples, this course is designed to provide a fuller understanding of how the human brain works.
Course 2: Psychology of Creativity

Why are certain people so creative? Is it genetic (遗传的), or a result of childhood experience? Are they different from everyone else? This popular psychology course highlights the different theories of creativity.
Course 3: Creative Storytelling

This college-level course in creative storytelling functions as an introduction to a variety of storytelling techniques that appear in different forms of creative writing, such as short fiction and playwriting.
Course 4: Sports Economics

In this course we will analyze many interesting aspects of the sports industry: sports leagues, ticket pricing, salary negotiations(协商 ), discrimination(歧视), and NCAA policies to name a few.
When I was in the eighth grade, my class was assigned (指派) to be friends with the second-grade kids. I got this little girl named Shelley. The first time I saw her, she was silent and cold. She was small for her age, and she didn't play with the other kids in her class.
I tried all kinds of things to get her to talk to me. I bought her toys, crayons and candies. But try as I might, nothing worked. One time, I gave her a coloring book and said, "Shelley, now you can color at any time."
Shelley looked at the coloring book and then looked up at me, and finally looked away. By that, I didn't know how I was going to get through to the little girl, but I knew I wouldn't give up on her.
One Friday, I decided to tell her a story about my childhood. I told her that I felt lonely when I was with my classmates, and how I thought only my teachers liked me. I also told her that every day was a battle(战役) for me and that I fought back tears so people wouldn't know how much I was hurting.
She sat there just listening, trying to decide whether I was lying or not. Finally, when my story ended, there were tears in her eyes. And then she did the unthinkable, She said, "Thank you." From then on, Shelley was a different little girl. She started smiling and talking with other kids.
Looking back at this,I'm in awe(惊叹), because all I did was to help her realize that she wasn't alone. I didn't ask her to tell her story, because her story is my story,
As the school year barely(刚刚) starts in Denver, French teacher Melanie is filled with worry that her students are always absent-minded. Yet, the problem isn't messaging, enjoying video games or delivering notes. Surprisingly, the problem is about the ongoing heat wave in Denver.
"Today was a little bit hot, so I noticed that kids were very sleepy and they had to get up to drink water quite often." said Melanie, who works at Denver East High School. "If you lose too much water, you have to keep going to the water fountain, which can take away from their classroom experience." While nodding off in class on a warm day may seem acceptable for average teens, Melanie's observation carries a bigger result than dry lips.
There have been quite a few media reports about teachers noticing that students were not able to focus on hotter days," said RJisung Park, a researcher. "Does a hotter climate during the school year actually affect the rate of learning?" The drop in academic achievements couldn't be explained by hotter weekends or hotter summers, but the trend was connected to higher temperatures on school days alone.
The connection between lost learning and a greater number of hot days is one more example of how climate change is already affecting our lives, and it's an alarm bell for what we stand to lose in the future.
Humans still have time to lessen the global warming. Without any important changes in the next 10 years, the globe will be trapped in heat waves that might be too much for human beings.
"I'm going to fail!" My best friend cried. She and I had this conversation almost every day while we were in high school.
The truth was that my friend never failed in any subjects. I just think that she can't accept failures because she lives her life as a perfectionist. What she fails to understand is that a lot of good can come from failures.
For example, failure can help build relationships. Once I was cooking dinner for a friend, I was tired, and several dishes I tried to make turned out bad. I grew more and more upset until my friend told me that I shouldn't worry. She cared more about our friendship than the dishes. That day, I learned that failure doesn't always make people dislike you. In fact, after she said those words to me, I grew closer to her.
Failure can make success evermore exciting. Every few years, there would be an important test in the PE class at our school. Students had to run a mile within eight minutes. I was never good at running, so I failed every time until the third year at school. Then I began working out regularly, and yet still failed that year. A few days later, however, the teacher gave me and some other students another chance to run and I got a pass finally! You can't imagine how excitedly I was after that. I felt the memory of the success was as sweet as honey, because I had to overcome failure to reach it.
Now it's clear to see that failure can teach us good lessons. It's not an end, but it can be a beginning
How to Be an Effective Member of a Team
Working in a team can be rewarding, but at times it can be difficult. To create a successful team, effective communication methods are necessary. Here we've outlined some ways to avoid some common team mistakes as well as some helpful advice.
Communicate
___Letting bad feelings grow will only make you feel bad and want to isolate yourself from the group. Not only does it feel good to get the bad feelings out, but it will be better for the team in the long run.

People in your group will lose respect for you if you' re constantly blaming(责备) others for not meeting deadlines. Group members understand if you have a heavy workload and aren't able to meet a deadline. Saving something like. "I'm really sorry, but I' ll get it to you by the end of today." will earn you a lot more respect than trying to make it seem like it's everyone else's mistake that leads to your missing the deadline.
Support Group Members' Ideas
If a team mate suggests something, always consider it! ___ And this makes you a good team member. After all, nobody likes a know-it-all.
Listen Actively
Look at the person who's speaking to you, nod, ask questions and acknowledge what's said by paraphrasing points that have been made. If you're unclear about something that's been said, ask for more information to clear up any confusion before moving on. Effective communication is a vital part of any team. ___
Get Involved
Share suggestions, ideas, solutions and proposals with your team members. Take the time to help your fellow teammates. You can guarantee there will be a time in the future when you'll need some help or advice. ___

Soon after my arrival in Luanda, I realized that I was going to have some free time available. I decided to spend it doing something useful and taking part in activities in the1 community. I started my search for volunteering opportunities here and a blog post2 my eye. It was Asthma's3 on how she started her4 journey in Luanda. Asthma has been volunteering at the Foundation(基金会) for Art and Culture for more than a year. I decided to get in touch with them and soon after I got a very warm and welcoming5 inviting me to the foundation.
